Exactly how far back does CapitolMac go in Richmond? Well, we’re one of America’s first Apple-authorized resellers, for one thing. In fact, we have such a long, storied history that, somewhere around 1999 or 2000, back when Apple decided to open its own retail stores, they decided to visit a few Apple resellers around the country to observe and take notes on how to do it right. And along with a few giants in the independent Apple reseller world, we were one of those select few. (So does that mean that we have a little something to do with how awesome the Apple Stores look?)
So, yes, we’ve been a Richmond institution for a while. Since 1990, to be exact. Before landing at our current location (our largest store ever) in early 2016, we were in three other locations, all of them in the Fan neighborhood of Richmond. At the corner of West Main and Vine Streets, we occupy the entire ground floor of what we’ve taken to calling the CapitolMac Building.
Please note that construction is still ongoing, and that our Richmond store is temporarily in a rough, unfinished state. We are still more than happy to sell and service all the same products we always have, though our ability to conduct in-store training may be impeded by our temporarily limited space. We are currently targeting an April, 2017 grand opening for our new 3,000-square-foot flagship store.

Although we’ve only been in Baltimore under the CapitolMac name since 2010, our connection to Charm City goes back farther and is, uhhh, more complicated. From the late 1990s until 2002, the Baltimore area was served by an independent Apple Specialist in Towson named Mac Home and Office. Back then, they were a sister company of a much younger CapitolMac in Richmond (by way of a parent company named Uptime Computer, based in northern Virginia). Long story short, the DNA of that company has filtered its way down to us.
So here’s another way to look at it: If you happen to remember Mac Home and Office in Towson, well, we’re carrying their torch today. (And we’ve got one of their old employees, too!) And just as they used to be Baltimore’s only Apple Specialist, we now are. No one else in Baltimore City sells and services the entire line of Apple products, with full Apple authorization.
Oh, another interesting bit of trivia about our Baltimore store. You know how Steve Jobs used to drop by the Palo Alto Apple Store all the time, because it was a short walk from his house? Well, this is our version of that. The owner is a 25-minute walk away, and has a tendency to drop by unannounced whenever he feels like it. Imagine how fun that is.

The Shops at New Town
5131 Main Street
Williamsburg, VA 23188-2811
The youngest CapitolMac yet, we opened in the Shops at New Town in 2015 to a welcoming crowd, many of whom were already customers of our Richmond location. We’re proud to have extended our reach to the good people of Hampton Roads.
Our Williamsburg store has the uncanny talent of leading the CapitolMac pack, by far, in customer satisfaction. Their flawless string of Yelp and Google reviews tell the tale. Consequently, we have no choice now but to send our spies over there to study them very, very closely.
